Summer Reading for the 2022-2023 School Year
- Choose a grade appropriate novel of your choice for the 2022-23 school year. You may select your books from the YA section of the library or bookstore.
- Complete the novel and Google Slide presentation for your appropriate grade level book before or on September 9, 2022.
- Please e-mail your presentation to CCrocitto@stmartinmarianist.org
- If there is no submission of summer reading, the student will receive an “F” in Literature on the first trimester progress report as well as a failing test grade.
Entering 6th Grade: Focus on Theme
Theme in a story is its underlying message, or “big idea.” What is the main message that the author wants you to take away after completing the book? What lesson do you believe could be learned after completing the book?

Entering 7th Grade: Focus on Conflict
Conflict is a struggle between two opposing forces. There is both external conflict – conflict between the character and an outside force – and internal conflict – conflict happening within the character like a want or feeling. What did the conflict in your story teach you?

Entering 8th Grade: Focus on Plot
Plot is the sequence of events that make up a story. There are 5 points of plot. Use each slide to describe the 5 parts of plot
Slide 1: The title and author of the book
Slide 2: Part 1 of Plot: Exposition – the main characters, setting (time and place) and the major conflict that sets the story in motion
Slide 3: Part 2 of the Plot: Rising Action – explain 2 events that lead up to the climax of the book. These will be located in the first half of the book
Slide 4: Part 3 of the Plot: at the peak of the story, a major event that will define the main character, this is the highest drama or interest level of the story. Explain the climax of your book
Slide 5: Part 4 of the Plot: Falling Action – explain 2 events that happens after the climax of the book. These will be located in the second half of the book
Slide 6: Part 5 of the Plot: Resolution – the conclusion of the conflict and ties up all loose ends of the story.
