Major renovations of the school building began shortly after the last day of school back in June. Besides the normal summer upkeep and refreshing work there are two major projects been done this summer.
The first project is the installation of LED lights throughout the entire building in all classrooms, hallways, stairways and offices. Since LED lights use less energy this will result in a major economic savings.
The second major project is the installation of an entirely new heating system. The old system was original to the building and was nearly sixty years old. For the past several winters the system has been showing its age and causing heating difficulties. The overhaul includes the removal of not only the old boilers but the removal of all the old piping throughout the building to every radiator in every classroom, stairwell and office.
Once all of the old was removed, new piping had to be installed and connected to the new boilers. An independent heating and air conditioning system was also installed in the Sacred Heart Commons. We are looking forward to a very warm and toasty winter this year.
Although professional plumbers were called in to assist with the major renovation of the heating system, the work force consisted mainly of SMMS teachers, SMMS student volunteers, SMMS graduates, KMHS students and the KMHS maintenance department. This summer’s work is truly an undertaking of the entire Marianist Family.
