Nine years ago, in early August of 2004, the newly appointed pastor of St. Martha’s Parish, Msgr. Francis Caldwell, approached the Marianist Province of Meribah. The regional elementary school for which he was responsible was failing. In the summer of 2004 the school had no principal and only 125 students. The future of the school was looking bleak. Msgr. Caldwell turned to the Marianist for some advice as to how to keep the school open. The Marianists have been involved with the work of Catholic education on Long Island since 1930. Marianist Priests and Brothers teach at and administer Chaminade High School in Mineola and Kellenberg Memorial High School in Uniondale.
After some initial discussions with the Marianists as to how the school could become vital again, Msgr. Caldwell and Bishop Murphy, the bishop of the Diocese of Rockville Centre, asked the Province of Meribah to assume responsibility for the school. Thus on August 18, 2004 St. Martin de Porres Marianist School was born.
Today, as we embark on a year-long celebration of our 10th year, SMMS is thriving and still growing. We have over 430 students from all over Nassau County and even some from NYC and Suffolk County. Ninety-nine percent of our 8th grade graduates go on to attend a Catholic high school. After high school our graduates have attended very qualitative colleges and universities and are pursuing careers in diverse areas as education, law, criminal justice, and medicine.
Throughout this upcoming school year there will be many events to mark our 10th year. Listed below are some of the biggest events of the First Trimester that you might want to mark on your calendars now:
— Saturday, September 21st Back to School Mass and BBQ, Opening Mass for Celebration of 10th Anniversary
— Friday, October 18th 10th Anniversary Celebratory Dinner for Parents and Parents of Alumni
— Thursday, October 31st Family Autumn Festival
— Monday, November 4th Celebration of the Feast of St. Martin de Porres
— Saturday, December 7th Breakfast with Santa
As we begin our 10th year, we ask Mary, our Blessed Mother; St. Martin de Porres, our patron; and Blessed William Joseph Chaminade, the Founder of the Marianists to intercede with Jesus asking for abundant blesses on us all. May we continue to be faithful to our mission of creating a school that is a vibrant and faithful Catholic community where children and their teachers grow in an atmosphere of loving concern.
