We didn’t have too many days of school last week due to all of the snowstorms, but the days we were at school were filled with many activities.
On Tuesday, February 11th we all gathered in St. Martha’s Church to celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes. Fr. Tom reminded all of us that if our hearts are opened to God and our ears are attentive to His voice then we too can experience the warmth of the love He has for each of us. Fr. Tom recounted the story of young Bernadette and how Mary, the Mother of Jesus, appeared to her in the French countryside. In a time much like our own, when only so few people are attentive to God in their lives, Mary asked Bernadette to remind the people to pray the Rosary, ask God for the forgiveness of their sins, and to live according to the Beatitudes. Let us fervently pray that we would allow God to be part of our lives each day.
Children from 4th grade to 8th grade battled it out for nearly 90 minutes during the Geography Bee on Wednesday morning. It was obvious that all of the contestants spent many hours preparing for this year’s bee. Round after round saw only few having to return to their seats for giving a wrong answer. Whether the topic was continents or USA state capitals, the contestants knew their geography thoroughly. The contest lasted beyond the normal assembly period right through the most of first period. As for most of first period, Karl Loiseau of the 7th grade and Bamidele Adeyemo of the 4th grade tossed questions and answers back and forth as if you were watching a tennis match. Finally as second period was soon to begin and all of the prepared bee questions had been read, Mr. Holian declared both Karl and Bamidele co-champions for this year. Congratulations to all!

Due to the snow, icy roads and overall poor travel conditions, SMMS will be closed tomorrow, Friday, February 14th. Happy Valentine’s Day to all! Enjoy tomorrow with your loved ones. Be safe and stay well.
We will see everyone on Monday, February 24th! Enjoy your Winter Recess. We pray that Jesus, our Brother; and Mary, our Mother, would keep us all under their loving care in the week ahead.
Hopefully Spring will be coming soon.
May the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit be glorified in all places through the Immaculate Virgin Mary. Amen.
Due to the coming snow storm that will visit Long Island tomorrow, SMMS will be closed on Thursday, February 13th. We pray that all of our families will be safe during this storm. We ask God to watch over all those men and women who plow our roads and continue to provide us with all the needed services.
Enjoy the snow day and be safe.
On Friday evening, February 7th, nearly 100 Pre-K to 4th grade children and their parents enjoyed a fun-filled evening at the Fairy Tale Ball; the theme of this year’s Family Reading Night.
The evening began when Prince Charming (Mr. Morris) read to all the gathered children the tale of Jack and the Bean Stalk. Once the tale was told, the Pre-K and Kindergarten children went to their classrooms to color a four-foot tall medieval fairy castle playhouse and to have their moms and dads read to them. Meanwhile the 1st to 4th graders read to their moms and dads and crafted their very own knight’s shield of faith.
Once everyone was gathered back in the Sacred Heart Commons, Belle (Mrs. Talamo) read to the children the story of The Gingerbread Boy. The evening concluded with a book gift and cookies and juice for all!

Blessed William Joseph Chaminade, the founder of the Society of Mary, died over 250 years ago on January 22, 1850. Each year all of the Marianist schools in the Province of Meribah recall the life and work of Fr. Chaminade by celebrating a special Eucharist in his memory. On Thursday, January 30th Fr. Tom came to celebrate Mass with all of us in St. Martha’s Church. Fr. Tom reminded all the children how Fr. Chaminade dedicated his life to teaching young men and women how to be true disciples of Jesus. He told us all that we can always turn to Mary as our Mother to help us in becoming friends of Jesus.
In his honor, Chaminade High School, Kellenberg Memorial High School and St. Martin de Porres Marianist School had no classes on Friday.
Saturday afternoon was the 10th Annual Ladies’ Tea and Fashion Show hosted in KMHS’ beautiful Millennium Room. Sixteen eighth grade ladies modeled the latest fashions for a room filled with over 120 junior high girls, their moms and grandmas as well.
After watching the show, who could resist the tempting cookies, cupcakes and flowing chocolate fountain! The Ladies’ Tea and Fashion Show was the first of the social events that SMMS inaugurated when the school began 10 years ago.
Today the Cub Scouts celebrated their Annual Blue and Gold Mass and Brunch. Mass in St. Martha’s Church was followed by brunch in the Sacred Heart Commons. Moving up awards were presented to some of the scouts after brunch.
This coming Friday evening, February 7th, is Family Reading Night. Looking forward to seeing many families there for a wonderful night of reading.
